Jason Childers is a native North Carolinian and a product of the Concord High
School band program in Concord where he received his earliest music
education under the direction of Ray Landreth, Don Flewell, and Philip
Morgan. He performed in the Marching, Concert, and Jazz Bands of Concord
High and was honored many times winning auditions and being selected for
numerous county, district, and state band clinics.
After receiving a North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship, Childers began
studying trumpet with Mr. Joe Phelps as an undergraduate at Appalachian State
University in the instrumental music education program. As both an
undergraduate and graduate student, he performed with the Wind Ensemble, Jazz
Band I, Orchestra, and many other small ensembles on campus. All four year of
his undergraduate studies, Childers performed with "Blue Ridge Brass," a
collegiate brass quintet coached by Mr. Joe Phelps. While in Jazz Studies at
Appalachian, he performed with touring musicians such as Allen Vizzuti, Nick
Brignola, and others.
Childers completed his masters at Appalachian State University in music
on with a concentration in conducting. He studied there with Dr.
William Gora and Dr. Jay Jackson. Before coming to the Unifour area, Childers
served as Director of Bands at Hugh M. Cummings High School in Burlington
North Carolina. Currently, he is the director of Bands at South
Caldwell High School in Hudson and a resident of Granite Falls.
Jason continues to be a first call substitute while he retains his duties at
South Caldwell High School.
